چکیده

The reactivity o f the bleaching herbicide clom azone with reduced glutathione (GSH) was studied under in vitro conditions. C lom azone at 1.3 m M and GSH a t 100 m M were reacted in a phosphate buffer (pH 8.8) at 25 CC for 3 days. The resulting synthetic product was identified as a G S-conjugate o f clom azone by means o f TLC , H PLC , and mass spectrom etry (chemical ionization) procedures. Exogenous application o f 0.5 m M o f G SH and cysteine reduced signifi cantly the bleaching effect o f clom azone on leaf disks o f velvetleaf (Abutilon theophrasti Medik.). M ercaptoethanol was no t effective in antagonizing the bleaching effect o f clom azone on velvetleaf leaf disks. These results show tha t clom azone can react with selected thiol com pounds under in vitro conditions. The conjugation o f clom azone with GSH may be involved in the metabolic detoxication o f this herbicide in plants.

Environmental fate and toxicology of clomazone.

Clomazone, an isoxazolane herbicide, was first registered for use in 1986 for pest grasses and broad leaf weeds. Although the exact mode of action is still unclear, it is well documented that clomazone causes bleaching of foliar structures; the clomazone metabolite 5-ketoclomazone is regarded to cause the bleaching and to be the ultimate plant toxicant. Although clomazone exhibits low mammalian...

Oxidative stress biomarkers and acetylcholinesterase activity in human erythrocytes exposed to clomazone (in vitro)

The aim of this study was to investigate the effect of clomazone herbicide on oxidative stress biomarkers and acetylcholinesterase activity in human erythrocytes in in vitro conditions. The activity of catalase (CAT), superoxide dismutase (SOD) and acetylcholinesterase (AChE), as well as the levels of thiobarbituric acid reactive substances (TBARS) and reduced glutathione (GSH) were measured in...

Interference of Dimethazone with Formation of Terpenoid Compounds

Dimethazone is a bleaching herbicide without any peroxidative activity. In addition to the inhibition of chlorophylls, carotenes, and xanthophylls, decreased formation of other prenyl lipids (phytol and a-tocopherol) can be observed in the presence of dimethazone. Application of this herbicide to pea plants results in the inhibition of longitudinal growth of the newly formed internodes which ca...

Differential Responses of the Antioxidant System of Ametryn and Clomazone Tolerant Bacteria

The herbicides ametryn and clomazone are widely used in sugarcane cultivation, and following microbial degradation are considered as soil and water contaminants. The exposure of microorganisms to pesticides can result in oxidative damage due to an increase in the production of reactive oxygen species (ROS). This study investigated the response of the antioxidant systems of two bacterial strains...

PEST MANAGEMENT: WEEDS Alert®, a New Clomazone Formulation

A new formulation of clomazone (the active ingredient in Command herbicide) was evaluated at four locations in 2010. The trade name of this product is Alert® and it was developed by Cheminova. The level of crop response and barnyardgrass control observed with Alert was similar to that of Command herbicide. Furthermore the rate structure and level of control observed by soil type appears to be t...
